Conference and Team Clues: A Map of All 30 Teams
Updated Oct 28, 2026
Team is the first column in Guess the Player, and conference is the first clue in Silhouette. Both reward you for knowing how the 30 teams are split up. This guide lists every team with the abbreviation Hardwood uses, explains how the team column is graded, and shows how to use the conference clue in Silhouette.
The Eastern Conference
The 15 Eastern teams are Atlanta Hawks (ATL), Boston Celtics (BOS), Brooklyn Nets (BKN), Charlotte Hornets (CHA), Chicago Bulls (CHI), Cleveland Cavaliers (CLE), Detroit Pistons (DET), Indiana Pacers (IND), Miami Heat (MIA), Milwaukee Bucks (MIL), New York Knicks (NYK), Orlando Magic (ORL), Philadelphia 76ers (PHI), Toronto Raptors (TOR), Washington Wizards (WAS).
If the Silhouette clue says East, every one of these teams is still possible, so use it together with the position and height clues rather than on its own.
The Western Conference
The 15 Western teams are Dallas Mavericks (DAL), Denver Nuggets (DEN), Golden State Warriors (GSW), Houston Rockets (HOU), Los Angeles Clippers (LAC), Los Angeles Lakers (LAL), Memphis Grizzlies (MEM), Minnesota Timberwolves (MIN), New Orleans Pelicans (NOP), Oklahoma City Thunder (OKC), Phoenix Suns (PHX), Portland Trail Blazers (POR), Sacramento Kings (SAC), San Antonio Spurs (SAS), Utah Jazz (UTA).
Fifteen teams each means a conference clue cuts the pool of players roughly in half. It is a strong first clue, but only a first one.
A handy way to memorise the map is by region. The Western list includes the Pacific coast teams, the mountain and desert teams, and the Texas teams, while the Eastern list covers the Atlantic seaboard, the Great Lakes and Florida. Two teams share a city but sit in the same conference, so a city name alone never settles the question. Use the abbreviation, because it is what the board shows.
How the team column is graded
Green means your guessed player currently plays for the same team as the mystery player. Yellow means your guessed player has played for the mystery player's current team at some point in their career, even if they play elsewhere now. Red means neither.
That makes yellow informative. It says the answer currently plays for a team your guess has played for at some point, so the answer's club is one from your guessed player's career history.
A red team cell is still useful. It says the answer's current team is not your guess's current team and is not any team your guess has played for, so you can rule out every club on your guessed player's career list.
Using the conference clue in Silhouette
Silhouette gives you four guesses and unlocks one clue after each wrong guess. The first clue is the conference. After that it reveals the position and then a height band: under 190 cm, 190 to 205 cm, or over 205 cm.
Your first guess is made blind, so pick a player you are fairly sure about. After the conference clue arrives, you can discard half the pool and guess a player from the right side.
Also remember that the clue refers to the player's current team, the same one the team column uses in Guess the Player. A player who recently moved from a Western team to an Eastern one counts as East, so avoid guessing from where you last saw them play.
Learning the map
The quickest way to learn the teams is to play. Each Guess the Player round shows team abbreviations, and Silhouette shows the conference after your first miss, then the position, then a height band. Practice mode lets you repeat that loop as often as you like without affecting your streak.
Do not worry if you do not know every roster. The team column does not require you to name the mystery player's team in advance, only to use the feedback. A yellow cell tells you the answer currently plays for a team your guess has played for, and that alone often shortens the list considerably.
